• A helicopter parent is a term for a person who pays extremely close attention to his or her child or children, particularly at educational institutions.
• They rush to prevent any harm or failure from befalling them or letting them learn from their own mistakes, sometimes even contrary to the children's wishes.
• They are so named because, like a helicopter, they hover closely overhead, rarely out of reach whether their children need them or not.
Why are parents watching or 'hovering' over their childlren so closely? Critics say some parents are too involved in their children's lives and when they grow up, they are not ready to enter the real world. There's a lot of good vocabulary to be learned in this lesson. In the class, I read an article written by a columnist for USA Today and one from CNN.com. While I'm reading, I go over some vocabulary words that I think may be tough. I've underlined those words. I ask the class's opinion and get their involvement and reaction.
If you do teach this lesson, be aware that it's for adults only and you need to be careful not to offend anyone. Remind everyone that this is an opinion.

Superstitious bloggers have linked China's earthquake disaster and other recent misfortunes to the five Olympic mascots, a Hong Kong newspaper reported yesterday.
Gossip sites are full of speculation that four of the five cartoon mascots have fulfilled prophesies of doom with one more, connected to the Yangtze River, still to come, the South China Morning Post said. The five Olympic mascots are Jingjing, Huanhuan, Yingying, Nini and Beibei. Jingjing, a panda, is the animal most closely associated with Sichuan province where the earthquake struck. Huanhuan, a cartoon character with flame-red hair, is being linked by bloggers to the Olympic torch that has been dogged by anti-China protests on its round-the-world tour. Yingying, an antelope, is an animal confined to the borders of Tibet, which has been the scene of riots and the cause of international protests against China, the bloggers say. Nini, represented by a kite, is being viewed as a reference to the "kite city" of Weifang, in Shandong, where there was a deadly train crash last month. That leaves only Beibei, represented by a sturgeon fish, which online doomsayers suggest could indicate a looming disaster in the Yangtze River, the only place where sturgeon is found. A Peking University sociologist, Xie Xueluan, told the newspaper: "Chinese see major calamities as divine intervention … The absence of religion reinforces this trend." Other online prophets of doom say the recent disasters have come on days that are related to the normally lucky Chinese number eight. The Tibet riots (14/3) and the earthquake (12/5) happened on a date whose digits add up to eight. This bodes ill for the opening day of the Beijing Olympics - August 8, 2008 - which was chosen for its auspicious abundance of China's lucky number. Article taken from SMH.com.
June 17 Celebrites and Gossip ESL PPT - just addedI just added my last ESL Powerpoint lesson titled Celebrity Talk. In this lesson, I have many slides of website celebrity gossip pages. I introduce different celebrities to the class as well as go over some vocabulary, like rumor mill, baby bump, rob the crade, crash pad, etc. I also talk about Forbes 2008 Top Celebrity list. I introduced the class to the top 10 celebrities. Who they are and why they're so popular. Oprah Winfrey, Angelina Jolie, Brad Pitt, Jay -Z, Beyonce Knowles, etc. The lesson then covers some recent gossip about celebs like Britney Spears, Tori Spelling and Paris Hilton. Lots of vocabulary in this lesson! (hooking up, attached at the hip, cameos, bash, bling, out on the town, etc.) I conclude with more snapshots from websites, like OMG Yahoo, about.com and People.com. Plastic surgery, fashion faux pas and finally celebrities' crazy baby names. Check it out! It's a lot of fun!

NEW ESL Powerpoint Lesson added - All About HomesI just added my last ESL Powerpoint lesson titled "All About Homes." The lesson teaches some basic vocabulary used in real estate. The first few slides quiz the classroom about some commonly used housing terms, for example, floor plan, financing, negotiating, price range, mortgage, garage, fixer-upper... I then talk about some of the more popular idioms relating to 'house.' Bringing down the house, went through the roof, on the house, hit the roof and several more. The last part of this lesson takes a look and the homes of a few famous billionaires, like Bill Gates, Oprah Winfrey, Ralph Lauren, Warren Buffet and many more. To conclude the class, I talk about the world's first billion dollar home, called the Antilla. It's in Mumbai, India and is the most expensive home in the world, nearly US$2 billion! It covers some basic vocabulary, like puns and idioms. The PPT has slides with different visual puns and their explanation. It's a good way to teach students different idioms, phrases and words. The next PPT is a short icebreaker. Give your students one M&M candy and have them tell you something about themselves based on the color of M&M. It's a lot of fun!
